How does DCS define a “special needs” adoption or a “special needs child”?

A special needs adoption involves a special needs child. A special needs child fits into at least one of the following categories:

Member of a sibling group of two or more children who must be placed together

A child with a medical condition or physical challenge, as determined by a physician licensed to practice in Indiana or other state medical board

A child with a mental, emotional developmental or educational challenge as determined by a psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist licensed to practice in Indiana or other state licensing board
