Not yet, but 10-digit dialing (area code + prefix + XXXX) will be mandatory for local calls in the 317 area in September 2016. A grace period will begin in March 2016 to give consumers time to adapt to 10-digit dialing. The new calling pattern is needed so that the new 463 area code can be added. Otherwise, the 317 area would be projected to run out of available phone numbers in the near future. All new area codes added in the United States since 2008 have been added through the "overlay" method with 10-digit dialing. To learn more, visit http://www.in.gov/oucc/2800.htm.
