What is an “accommodation”?
What is an "accommodation"?
Accommodation means a change in policies, job responsibilities or the environment so that people with disabilities can enjoy equal opportunities to employment and access to housing and public conveniences (such as hotels, restaurants, banks, movie theaters and any other place open to the public). This may mean allowing service animals in an apartment that prohibits pets. It could mean permitting an employee to take more frequent breaks or be able to sit down. It might also mean assisting someone with visual or hearing impairments to communicate with a doctor or waiter. Employers are also required to make reasonable accommodations for those employees whose religious beliefs or practices may conflict with workplace policies (for example, allowing the wearing of a headdress when hats are generally prohibited).
